Bookable on Priceline. Priceline allows free cancellations until 11:30pm ET the day after purchase. Earn 2.14 points per dollar with Chase Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card® Card.

USAirways has cheap coast to coast fares, as long as you don’t mind flying from or into Newark and making a connection.

The Newark-Los Angeles sale runs until the end of scheduling with 2014 dates running $108-$123.50 each way and 2015 dates running $127.45 each way.

Rather than post every possible sale date like I did for the recent $69 JetBlue sale let’s try teaching some folks how to fish.

1. Open up Google’s ITA Matrix.

2. Select “one-way” and select “see calendar of lowest fares,” as pictured below. Search from NYC which includes EWR, JFK, and LGA. Then select the starting date for it to search for cheap dates.

3. Take a look at the calendar view to see which dates might work for you. The $108, $114, and $115 dates are the USAirways sale dates:

4. Click on a date to view the flight details and compare the price to other options.  Based on this date you’ll save $91 each way per passenger by taking the USAirways connecting flight versus a nonstop option.  For a family of 6 that’s a savings of more than $1,000 round-trip:

5. Do the same thing for the return, just reverse the routing from LAX to NYC to pull up the sale dates for the reverse direction:

6. ITA doesn’t sell tickets, so once you find cheap dates and flights just hop onto Priceline to book them. You’ll have until 11:30pm the following day to cancel free of charge if you decide to change your plans.

Decent deal but bummer that they’re not nonstop. EWR to LAX or SFO is fine for a 4-day trip with a redeye on the return, but adding layovers makes it a bit of a chore.

A

Why priceline over actual airline sites/expedia/orbitz/etc?

Dan

@jermaine:
Yes, some people would rather pay the money for the nonstop, other will take a short connection to save $1,000+ on their family vacation.

@A:
Longer cancellation policy for one.
Booking direct from the airline typically only gets a 24 hour cancel period.

With American you generally don’t get any cancel period when booking on AA.com (as they give 24 hours holds instead), so major advantage to use another booking site.

Priceline gives an extra 1.5 hours over Orbitz.

A

I ask bec of what happened during the the delta glitch

Dan

@A:
The reason people booked on PL for the Delta glitch was because Delta’s website wasn’t selling glitch tickets after the first couple minutes.

But other sites continued selling. And they were all honored.

Troll

Hey Dan, how come you didn’t right what dates this is valid for??

Zack

Hi Dan,
I noticed that there are a bunch of discount tickets from YYZ-TLV for $800 CDN on Delta, starting the end of sept. They even have a ticket for pesach (I think I put in 8-10 days). Check it out on ITA, since it is a big saving for us Canadians (stopover at JFK for possible hack on the way back).

GTR

@ Jermaine – It is a bummer. It’s a simple question of what’s your time worth tho. With similar non-stop routes costing $400 I’d ask you if you like me to pay you $28/hour for 4-6 hours to sit and read/stream a tv show?

Personally, sometimes I’d take the $28/hour… sometimes I wont.

Avromi

@Dan
When can you cancel until? Is this until midnight the next day or just 24 hours?

Avromi

Sorry missed it in note 6. Thanks!

aa

Thanks Dan got tickets for the holiday.

Anonymous

did the exact search you did but came up with much higher prices.

Anonymous

is this a sale for today or a couple days

Dan's the Man

You can go in Januarty (including Yeshiva break week) for only $255. A good deal!

@Anonymous: If you want the deal book NOW. You have 24 hrs to cancel. Book first think about it later.

JB

going on business, need to leave after working hours and depart from JFK or LGA. No time to travel to EWR, will lose a work day, which is costly too. So for those of us working, and need a short trip, no time to look for savings by spending extra hours for a lower fare.

So people of leisure, enjoy the good deal!

Dan's the Man

@JB: IF your work is paying why would you stop? Just go United, Virgin, American, or Delta from JFK. When work pays you of course go non-stop. You can usually get non-stop for under $400 if you book in advance JFK to LAX.

By the way there are no flights from LGA to LAX. There’s a 1,500 mile rule at LGA with Denver being grandfathered and exempted from this rule.

DAN:
When I go to matrix (3 tickets 7/25 newark-lax) it says $871 after all taxes. When I go on PL and try that flight its $1011. HELP???!!!

JB

@Dans the man, paying next week close to $800. no choice. cant take another day off to make a cheaper flight.
Going for own biz, and not reimbursed.

Avi Miller

Booked!!!
Newark – LA September 8-17
$230 each round trip ticket total!
THANK YOU DAN!!!!

AA 24 rule is better

Dan,
@Dan:

Dan, you’re a little off on the AA 24 hour rule.
they give u until 11:59 of the next day to buy the ticket.
the price is guaranteed at the hold level.
the best part is that if u don’t want it, do nothing, and it cancels automatically, unlike PL and most of the other airlines where if u don’t cancel in time, you lose
u don’t have to put up a CC and then get a refund.

Dan's the Man

@JB: Well business is business. Obviously you know what what is worth it / needed for your business schedule. Too bad you didn’t know you needed this trip on Dec 26 when you could have gotten $25 for coach non-stop or $58 for business non-stop on the Delta glitch.

?

Is this dead? Its not working at all for me with any web search. it says the regular prices

Dan

@AA 24 rule is better:
Exactly why you should hold on AA.com and then purchase on PL.com to get the best of both worlds.

Anon

Priceline does charge $7 to cancel. I booked first and thought later a few weeks ago on another ticket and I did not know until I needed to cancel that they charge $7 a ticket. I threw in a few reservations thinking I would have the option and then just cancel if I needed to, and without knowing in advance it cost me $7 a ticket.

YA

@JB:
Seems like you have plenty of time to comment how you don’t have time.

Dan

@Anon:
I’ve cancelled PL tickets many times with no fee.

Y and N

does ITA include Southwest flights? Are there other airlines that they don’t cover?

Miles

@Dan: Thank you for the ITA Matrix refresher. I know how to use ITA fairly well, but just never think about it on those rare occasions when I’m buying airfare (as opposed to award travel). This posting was a good reminder.

The few $108 NYC-LAX tickets that were available are all sold by now, but other treasures are still waiting to be found on ITA.

AR

I’ve tried ITA before a few times and have never been able to find or get an agent to find a fare quoted three if it wasn’t quoted elsewhere. A number of oeople have said this to me (including a travel agent), that recreating an ITA fare that is only on ITA is almost never successful. Has anyone had success with it?

Anonymous

@Anonymous: Me as well! The cheapest I found was $191! What gives?!!

Aryeh

Thanks for the headsup Dan! Another great find

Motti

@AR: I had success and would be willing to help

mz

is this dead?
