hi i have an amex gold card that i got for 1st year free and plan on canceling it before the year is up. my question is what do i do with my points? they say if i cancel my card they will be gone! i am not ready to use them what would be your best option?

You only need to cancel it once the annual fee shows up.
Once that does happen you can open up another first year fee free AMEX charge card, or just transfer the points out to the airline of your choice.
