When I tried to fly standby (on a flight that left one hour earlier than mine) on USAirways last week they told me it would be $50 (for a flight from Charlotte to DC). I asked 3 people at 3 different counters.

When you say that unconfirmed standby is free, does that mean completely free? Or do you have to pay the cost of the ticket or anything else??

Gate agents can not waive stand-by fees without cause. If your ticketed or connecting flight is running late, gate agents could place you on an earlier or even a non-stop flight. It’s always a good idea to be nice to gate agents, they never hear good news.

All Southwest tickets can be canceled without penalty and the funds can be used by anyone for one year.

You would then be able to buy the flight that you want at the current price. If only full fare were available then you would have to pay the difference to the full fare cost.

How does Southwest work, if you got a discount “purchased in advance” ticket, would you have to pay the difference to a full fare if you wanted to go standby?
