You can save 10% at all US Target stores on Sunday as a goodwill gesture for the recent chainwide credit/debit card theft issues. The discount isn’t valid online.

The thefts are a good reminder of how badly debit cards stink.  Besides for the fact that credit cards earn better rewards, when there is a problem with a credit card charge you don’t have to pay it.  With a debit card the money is already taken out of your checking account and you have to fight to get it back.

Either way if you shopped at Target between 11/27-12/15 you should definitely be monitoring the cards that you used closely.

Perhaps a massive breach like this one will be the impetus to introduce more secure chip and pin cards that are becoming standard in many other countries.

Excludes all gift cards, entertainment cards, airtime cards, prepaid cards, iTunes cards, Apple, Bose, all video games, Playstation 4 consoles, Xbox One consoles, Target Mobile(SM), prescriptions, optical, clinic, and alcohol purchases. Offer cannot be combined with other storewide or category/department coupons.

I’m only paying cash. Not taking any chances.

jj

Does this work on GC’s?

Dan

@Nafnad2:
Suit yourself, there’s literally nothing to lose by using a credit card.

@jj:
No.

How does the smart chip help? I’ve seen this on my cards and have no clue how it works.

Jacksassonbk

The one time I shop in target in 10 years, they had to go ahead and have a security breach. Lol. Anyways thanks for the 10 points off…

Moshe

It’s for both Saturday and Sunday, for those on the west coast still shopping before midnight.

Huh!

If you have target card is it 15%?

CtownBin

@Azhoopsfan:
The smart chip helps tremendously because it is far harder to steal data off of them than it is from mere magnetic stripes, which is decades-old technology. And even if the fraudsters are able to steal the data off the terminals, which it seems is what happened here with Target, it is still far more difficult and expensive to create new fake Chip-based cards and program the chip. Never mind that most of the chip-based cards have PINs. This article explains some of these issues quite well: http://www.npr.org/blogs/alltechconsidered/2013/12/19/255558139/outdated-magnetic-strips-how-u-s-credit-card-security-lags
It’s amazing that in this day and age, credit cards in the US do not use PINs. Even here, we’ve had PINs on debit card networks for years, even with the magnetic stripes. Why should credit be any different??
But, I had the same thought as Dan- maybe a breach of this magnitude will finally be a major push that gets the US caught up with the rest of the world with Chip-and-PIN.

TheNewGuy

@Dan: why would you say that it doesn’t apply to GC’s? 10% off sounds like it’s across the boards 10%!

Yaks

@the new guy

@Yaks: @chaim: oh you guys weren’t clear of course you can’t BUY a GC with this 10% off , I was asking if I can USE a Target GC of my own towards my purchase and still get the discount

When they gave the 20% Coupon out for after Black Friday you did get the extra 5% for using Target Card so I don’t think today will be any different.
