Split By GroupMe: Free Until 03/12
Update #3: A $499 limit has been added to qualify for free processing.
Update #2: It’s back to being free again through 03/12!
Update, 03/08: It appears that GroupMe has gone back on their word and has started charging for this service early. They have edited the page and deleted the info on the service being free through 03/12. Congrats to those who got in before they made the change!
————————————————————
Split by GroupMe is a way for friends to chip in for something together and pay back one person for laying out the funds to buy something. There will be a 4% processing fee starting on 03/13/13, but until then you can send credit card payments to anyone for free.
Considering that this is intended for small purchases I’d imagine they may block large transactions.
If you try out the service please post how it works out for you.

From their site:
How much does it cost?
Per transaction, contributors will be charged 3.5% on whatever they chip in for a Credit Card Processing Fee. GroupMe charges a .99 convenience fee.
We may be too late.

As of 9:36 est today the FAQ page still says:
How much does it cost?
To celebrate the launch of GroupMe 4.1 and the introduction of Split, fees will be waived completely while you have a chance to try it out. From March 7th, to the end of SxSW Interactive, 11:59pm CST March 12th, you can collect and pool money absolutely free — Even the credit card processing fees are on us. (To learn more, come by the GroupMe Grill in Austin for a demo.)
After March 12th, fees will apply. Per transaction, Split creators pay no fees, while contributors will be charged 4.0% plus $0.99, which covers credit card processing fees and a small GroupMe convenience charge.

@Danny:
Much of this website is unethical shtick. There is frugal and then there is thievery. This site crosses the line

March 8th, 2013 at 3:11 pm
@Jack, on this specific post I happen to agree with you that it’s borderline, however if you follow so intently and read every comment and reply to them, either you agree some (most) of the sites morality, or just disappear
33
March 8th, 2013 at 3:53 pm
@Pyrate Baruch: i just did one using my wifes feature phone. all she needed was the ability to get a text message.
34
March 8th, 2013 at 3:54 pm
you probably verify a phone using twilio.com as well to get a number to receive text messages.

The fine print says…
Free offer applies to your first split transaction up to $499. Offer is valid between March 7 and March 12.

It notes at the bottom of the page that:

March 11th, 2013 at 5:48 am
Anyone seeing these post as Cash Advance? I saw some mention of that in the FW thread. My transactions are still PENDING.
47
March 11th, 2013 at 10:46 am
@Jack and @Al:
Not sure what is borderline here. Maybe you dont understand the point of promotions, which are to attract users and people to register. The company wants a ton of people to register and transfer money, so that when they approach investors they will tout incredible percentages of growth in both registered users and dollar amount transferred. This is a start-up. They just want to show growth to get huge amounts of investment.

March 11th, 2013 at 2:10 pm

March 15th, 2013 at 3:24 pm
OK got email now they are rejecting the transfer, what losers
56
March 15th, 2013 at 4:36 pm
got an email saying it is being denied for credit card abuse…
What:
The Split of which you were a member was canceled. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. GroupMe takes credit card network abuse and fraud very seriously and actively investigates any suspicious charges with our payment processor, Balanced.
Why:
In our monitoring of our zero fee promotion for Split on GroupMe, we determined that some individuals tried to use the Split service to transfer money directly from their credit cards to their own bank accounts, most likely to collect credit card rewards and points. This form of usage is against both GroupMe’s and Balanced’s Terms of Service.
What this means for you:
The Split creator will not be issued a credit (i.e., will not be able to collect money contributed to the Split). Additionally, all Split participants who put money in will have the entirety of that amount refunded to their credit cards.
57
March 15th, 2013 at 4:55 pm
Got the same email
58
March 15th, 2013 at 5:01 pm
I got my money deposited this morning but only tried $350. Eh, it helped me get to my minimum spend for testing SWA Plus card. I wonder if they blocked large transactions and let the small ones go.
59
April 9th, 2013 at 9:02 am
I got the money debited from my card now, and noticed they hit us with a $10.97 fee. Anyone else get that fee charged, and did they credit it?
