Light Updates This Week

This was originally posted on 02/10, it is stickied as the top post through 02/18:

In an hour I’ll be boarding my 2nd flight of the day, it is the longest nonstop commercial flight in the world at over 9,500 miles.  I’ll arrive some 19 hours after boarding…and still have 2 flights to catch after that :P

I’ll be back home on the evening of Monday, 02/18.  I’ll be sure to post while I’m on the road but updates and comment approvals will be very sporadic.

    Longest commercial flight is the all-business class, EWR-SIN.

    Seems like you’re headed on SQ 21 Singpare Airlines All Business Class Jet from Newark to Songapre. I flew that rout last year, awesome experience though its not the A380 service which would have been a better and more comfortable flight. Safe travel!

    dan can you confirm whether this flight crosses over the international date line? you leave at night, so is it dark the entire flight and you land 2 mornings later? or does it get light then dark again before landing?

    @levi:
    It does cross the dateline.
    It is dark the entire flight.

    @ levi and @ Dan
    I would assume that in the summer being that the north pole has 6 months of daylight that a good portion of the first half of the flight would be in daylight.
    It would also probably change the davening schedule during the flight.

    @Mitch: I am asking because of travel during sefiras haomer when crossing the dateline is very problematic as far as what day you observe shovuos. during sefira, the north pole should be light, so theoretically, the flight will leave on a sunday night, as you approach the northpole it will dawn into monday, and the question is will it get dark again before landing early tuesday morning in SIN, thereby not losing any days during the flight?! even if that was the case it still might not be so cut and dry!

    The flight does not go over the pole. It is a flight that is listed as 18 1/2 hours, but generally takes less. I booked it using 78,500 points and originated in HKG. Best value for the money for C travel from HKG to EWR. From what I was told by SIA, the flight will be discontinued sometime in March of this year.
