Costco has their 3 pound bags of Kirkland Atlantic Salmon on sale through 02/24 for just $15.79 per bag ($5.26/pound). If you haven’t had it before you get about 7 individually wrapped salmon filets.

They are certified OU kosher.  They are also kosher for Passover even with just a plain OU symbol.

These are also great when you’re in Hawaii and looking for some kosher food as each of the primary Hawaiian islands has at least one Costco and prices for the most part are the same as they are back on the mainland, something that can’t be said for other stores in Hawaii like Whole Foods, Walmart, Kmart, or Safeway.

There is a limit of 3 bags per transaction, but in my experience cashiers will be happy to let you buy more in additional transactions.  These will stay fine in your freezer for many many months.

Did they correct the issue with bones found in the filets?

Dan

@yanki:
I’ve never found bones in these filets.

With the fresh @6.99 I see this such a good deal

aaron

I get fresh Atlantic on sale for $4.99lb

TG

jeff

Q. Aaron . Where ?

Tt

Found to be very dry.

Yes a good deal but still farmed Atlantic

Dan

Personally I like these and they’re so easy to deal with.
Just take ’em out of the freezer when you want them, add some spices (cracked peppercorn is great) and lemon juice on top, and throw them in the oven or on the grill.

The trick is just learning how long to cook them, undercook and it’s gross, overcook and it will be dry. But done right they’re moist delicious, and not fishy tasting at all.

Bob

Are the acceptable for pesach?

dave

dan would u open a cooking blog to, with some more good recipes

whYME

Is it weird that I actually like these better than fresh?

??

@whYME, now thats a great q for your rav or psychologist ..

noturbizniss

@whYME:
It’s not wierd it’s a clear sign of significant trauma as a child, likely involving either fish or a discount club warehouse. I would seek immediate psychological help from the in-house pschcolgist at costco!!!

Avi

@whYME,

I thought I was the only one! Sometimes I buy fresh because I think I’ll like it more, but I always go back to these because they’re just way more delicious. I broil 5 minutes on one side, 3 on the other, perfection!

A

Can it be ordered online?

Dovid

Hi.

You took pains to mention that these are OU kosher.

You also mentioned that although Costco’s policy is 3 per transaction, the cashiers will generally let you buy more.

I was wondering why you thought that taking advantage of that — and encouraging others to do so a swell — was kosher.

Thanks.

Dan

@Dovid:
Because the limit is not per member, it is 3 per transaction. If they wanted to make it 3 per member they would.

The cashiers are more than happy to split it up into 2 transactions. If the policy was 3 per member then they wouldn’t let you do this. Fact is they do and they have no problem with it.

Dovid

Dan:
Of course the cashiers will be happy to help out — because it’s not their money, it’s Costco’s!

Do you really think that if you would ask the manager if this would be OK, he would say “Sure, go right ahead!”?

And if not, why isn’t this called unkosher (OU notwithstanding)?

No Do

If you wonder why they taste the same or better then fresh, it’s because ALL salmon in the US must be frozen before selling/serving. This a precaution mandated by the US government to insure there no bugs there (I believe). So there really is no ‘fresh’ salmon…

Kevin

@Dovid: Costco is not limiting the sales because they are losing money on it. The “sale ” comes from the supplier who wants to either move their merchandise or wants to entice people people to try it. These are not “loss leaders”,where the store actually takes a loss on an item to encourage you to shop there. For example Tropicana OJ for 99cents, must spend at least $50. If you went into the store and just purchased Tropican OJ they lost money on you.
So why does Costco limit it to three. Since Costco is technically a wholesale club, it stops someone from coming in and buying up the entire inventory and then reselling it.They feel three is sufficient for one family to purchase. The cashier does it because the store allows it. If the store doesn’t allow it the cashier would be told not to do it.

Dan

@Dovid:
I’d be happy to bet you that my local Costco’s manager would happily allow me to buy 6 or 9 packs of Salmon.

As Kevin said, they’re trying to avoid resellers, not from members buying 6 packs of Salmon.

Dovid

Dan and Kevin:

Agreed that the idea is to encourage people to try it and then later become full-price customers. And that is why they set a 3-pack limit — enough to get hooked and not so much that you’re stocking up for the future.

If all they wanted to do was keep out resellers, wouldn’t they have set the limit higher than 3?

Dan, after you ask the manager about encouraging the oylam (not just yourself) to buy 9 rather than 3, let us know what he says.

No need to bet. I’m sure both you and everyone else here would want to make sure about this before becoming involved in geneivishe zachin. (If the cashier’s mechilla is not the supplier’s, then this is what it is.)

im trying to find out if anyoneyelse has not received their readers digest suscription ,that special that was around over 3 months ago . ther is no phone # for discountmags.com &they dont respond to my emails. please help

Kevin

@Dovid:I am sorry but you are wrong. You need to watch the hour long show on CNBC about Costco.Manufacturers and distributors want their products in Costco because they make a fortune.Have you ever seen Costco run out of Salmon?What happens to the salmon when it reaches the expiration date? The answer is that it becomes garbage. Ask the manager if he would rather through out the salmon or sell Dan 3 more packages?Costco is a well oiled machine. They get you to pay to shop there,provide no bags,make the store look like a warehouse,get you to buy stuff you weren’t planing on, have non union workers that are happy and paid well( and also have profit sharing plan) and are listed on the stock exchange.

whYME

@Dan:
“The cashiers are more than happy to split it up into 2 transactions.”

Has anybody tried this in Brooklyn?
I have a feeling they’re not as accommodating as in CLE…

Dovid

@Kevin:

They say that they have a rule of three per transaction.

That means that they wish to limit the amount they sell to each customer to three packages per visit.

The cashier has the ability to play tricks to help you beat the system, but does not have the legal authority to override management policy — which is they must do it in a tricky way.

That means it’s stealing, because you’re getting something that the owner of the merchandise is unwilling to sell you at that price.

Just because Costco makes millions, it does not make stealing from them permitted.

Kevin

@Dovid: No you are wrong. It says three per transaction. not per customer or per family. It is not stealing. I promise you nothing is being sold at a loss. Costco only suffers a loss from “shrinkage” (industry term for theft) That is why they have “BOB” (check the bottom of the basket). The supplier only suffers a loss from spoilage(yes Costco makes them take bake expired/out of date products or products that don’t sell.You don’t understand retail if you think they suffer a loss when a item is on sale. They would rather sell 100,000 products at a dollar a piece than 50,000 products at a $3 a piece product and have to throw away 10,000 spoiled products. Think about it. Don’t believe me, go ask the manager if you can do two transactions so that you could buy six.

Kevin

@whYME:I can tell that in Lawrence(5 towns) it is fine. They told me they are allowed to do 2 transactions. However, no more because it slows the line down.

Kevin

@Dovid:sorry but you are wrong. It is 3 per transaction not per visit,family, or account. If this was true your card wouln’t work the second time. You dont understand how Costco operates. The only time there is a loss to Costco is shoplifting(it is called shrinkage). That is why they check your receipt when you leave, and have BOB(check the bottom of the basket). The supplier only losses money when their item doesn’t sell and costco will no longer stock it,excessive spoilage(the item is not moving fast enough to be sold before the expiration date) or a high return rate.Dont take my word for it ask the manager.Stealing would taking the item without paying for it(which includes opening a package in the store,eating it and putting it back on the shelf),buying it and knowing that you have no intention of keeping it(consuming 1/2 a food item and then returning it-I have seen people doing it) or buying a tv,computer,etc to use for term(a football game, a school project, etc) and then returning it.Why do you think you no longer have to clip out coupons if a item is on sale?The name of the game in Costco is charge you to be a member, make you happy, and get you to buy items spontaneously. There are no loss leaders. Watch the show about Costco on CNBC and you will have a much better understanding.

Dovid

@Kevin:

So, why don’t they sell it for $3 off everyday and why set the three per transaction limit at all (rather than 6 or 9 or 12), if the only point is to move merchandise?

As regards to whether or not someone is losing money on the deal, that is irrelevant. If they say that they do not wish to sell you more than 3x and you connive a cashier to sell you 6x, you are stealing.

BTW, although it’s not relevant, how do you know that the distributor doesn’t lose money on the $3?

You think that they’re operating on more than a 15% markup?

Dovid

@Kevin:

Another example: If the store says, for instance, that they only wish to sell it to people without beards and you succeed in talking the cashier into selling it to you even though you have a beard, that is called stealing — even if you pay full price.

Kevin

@Dovid:so dont do it. How do I know? I happen to know a costume jewelry distributor as well as the owner of a leather jacket manufacturer. I understand how it works. You don’t want to buy it don’t,but don’t preach the holier than thou to me. As I said dont take my word go ask the manager.I dont understand why you would be on this website if you think it is stealing. You do what you want I and will do what I want. However, I hope everything you do in your life is as perfect as you preach( that includes every line of your tax return, do you always put money in the muni meter at 6:55 PM if no one is around?

mark

Is this the farmed or wild salmon??
Beware: Farmed Salmon has been proved to have high levels of PCBs and other toxins in them. This is due to what they are being fed. It is recommended that only 1 portion of farmed salmon be consumed per month. (BTW PCB levels are the reason why we don’t regularly eat fish from the Hudson).
Wild Salman is perfectly fine.

Kevin

@Dovid:no that is called discrimination.Someone needs some english lessons

Dovid

@Kevin:

You mean to say that this site is only for people who are unconcerned about whether something is considered stealing and are not interested in the perspective of someone who has a bit of knowledge on the subject?

I want to believe that what you are saying is not true.

As for your second comment, regarding a store saying that they won’t sell salmon to people with beards (for instance), my point is that stealing (at least in Jewsih Law) extends to those who acquire something that the owner of the merchandise does not wish to sell them, whether or not they pay full price. (Perhaps there are other Torah transgressions involved here as well.

cm

@Dovid: this is not a halchic site and stop preaching your shitas to all of us .You know what if they let they let , and I gurantee you the cashiers wouldnt do it if the managment didnt want them to because otherwise they would get fired.Dan just posted up the facts , if you dont want to you dont have to , but dont tell us whats right and whats wrong.

Dan

I think the bottom line is that if Costco really wanted to limit this they would program the discount to be just once per member, after all, you need to scan your card to shop there.

The fact that they don’t (and that my local store manager is fine with it as well) means that they aren’t trying to stop members from getting a few extra packs, their intention is that someone shouldn’t come in and buy out hundreds of them.

Sam

I don’t even understand the issue – Dan is right, but it’s more than that – they obviously allow you to buy more than 3, because their terms of the sale allow you to buy 3, then buy another 3. The only question is whether you have to walk out first and then walk back in. You’re buying it in 2 transactions, which is what Costco says you’re supposed to do. What’s the problem? Their terms of the sale say that you’re allowed to do this!

Cm

@Sam: agreed !!
