When you “You can also buy Amazon gift cards at a discount at Best Buy”, you are charged sales tax (8.75%) here in New York, so you actually LOSE money, no?

Incorrect. You do not pay sales tax when buying gift cards.
You have to be careful when you check out that they do not charge.
