Alitalia Does About-Face, Will Be Honoring Dirt Cheap Japanese Tickets!!!!!!

I posted on Saturday evening about insanely cheap Alitalia tickets, including tickets from JFK to Israel for $376.

On Sunday Alitalia emailed everyone that they would not be honoring the tickets and they surreptitiously added new terms to the deal that required flights to leave from Japan.

Now Alitalia has done an about-face and they announced will be honoring all tickets as long as they were not completely free! Was it due to DOT pressure? Facebook or twitter pressure? Who knows, but they’re honoring their original terms!

Additionally they are extending the current 25% off promotion until 10/28.

Ppl are all very excited about the $380 (approx) tickets, but did anyone even pay attention, that your going to be spending the entire day getting on and off planes??? Online with security ? yeah its cheap, but its a major pain! I fly to israel 3 times a year, and i usually do stopovers, by the time its all done you want to pass out already, so really the deal is awesome only if your in love with flying and have all day and night to get on and off planes!

    got email from alitalia.
    Dear Alitalia fans,

Thank you for the interest you took in our Facebook Global Offer. Alitalia was the first airline to create a global event of this kind for the Internet community: the most wide-ranging Alitalia promotion ever.

We offered a worldwide 25% discount, with the exception of Japan, where for technical reasons we were forced to create a unique E-Coupon worth 25.000 yen (approximately 250 euro) to be used exclusively for the purchase of flights from Tokyo or Osaka. This redemption rules were clearly stated in the Japanese version of the Facebook offer.

Unfortunately, due to a malfunction, the system did not recognize the limitation of this unique e-coupon to be used only on routes from Japan. As a result, the system erroneously allowed the voucher discount of 25,000 yen to be used on all routes in Alitalia’s global network.

The news spread rapidly online and in a matter of a few hours our Japanese website reported a dramatic surge in visits and purchase requests from several geographical areas.

This unusual occurrence on the Japanese website triggered a security system alert which, considering the high percentage of number of requests at zero cost, froze all transactions. The promotion’s objective was to spur and increase the sale of tickets at a discounted price, and not to issue tickets for free or at a minimal cost.

However, since Alitalia intends to protect clients who have committed a, albeit minimal, amount with their credit card, we confirm the validity of the transactions requested on the Japanese site with a value greater than 1 euro cent. Those clients will soon receive an e-mail with their ticket.

Finally, in consideration of the great success of the promotion, we decided to extend the 25% discount offer for two additional days.

    Alitalia Facebook Team

    then this from dot
This is in regard to your complaint against Alitalia Airlines about its recent advertisement offering 25,000 yen off of certain tickets on Alitalia. Based on our understanding of the available information, the advertisement, which was written in Japanese, denominated in Japanese yen, and posted on Alitalia’s Japanese website, was not directed at consumers in the United States. We note that Alitalia maintains a separate website dedicated to consumers in the United States and that the advertisement did not appear on that website. As such, the Office of Aviation Enforcement and Proceedings views the advertisement as falling outside of the scope of its jurisdiction and does not intend to take enforcement action against Alitalia, nor require the carrier to reinstate reservations made using the promotional code listed in the advertisement that were subsequently cancelled.

    @ Motti,
I booked the $760 flight from Israel – NY and have 8;20 – 2:40 stopover the way there and from 7:00 AM – 10;00 P.M on the way back. Not exactly 8 hours but close.
Also, tickets went up in price yesterday – almost booked the $560 tickets, but needed to make sure the dates but two hours later the tickets were an extra $200!!! Anyone else had this problem?

Your correspondence to the U.S. Department of Transportation regarding a recent Alitalia Japan Web site promotional discount code has been forwarded to us for response. Under the redemption rules, this particular code was only valid on Tokyo and Osaka flights. Unfortunately, Alitalia’s online reservation system erroneously permitted the discount to be applied to all Alitalia flights booked through the Japan Web site. After carefully considering this matter, Alitalia has decided to honor all tickets purchased with the promotional code, provided the transaction entailed a charge of more than one (1) euro cent. If you made such a purchase but were notified that your transaction had been cancelled, you should have received, or will soon receive, a confirmation email reinstating your ticket at the original purchase price, using the credit card information provided during your initial booking.

We thank you for the opportunity to provide this response and look forward to welcoming you aboard a future Alitalia flight.

First they told us they are not honoring the tickets booked on their Japanese site and they confirmed they were not being processed and credit card would not be debited. We then booked on the american site. When my credit card bill came in I was billed for 12 tickets to Israel – 8 from the Japanese site and 4 from the American site. On speaking with numerous people at Alitalia they confirmed that I would be refunded within 48 hours. When that didn’t happen we called again and were told it could take up to a week. That didn’t happen either and yesterday we were told it would be 3-6 months!!!! Can they do this? My amex card is now way over my limit and I am out by $6,000! Don’t know what to do next
