The 50% off coupon applies to the base fare, not taxes.
A round-trip flight from Newark to Toronto will run $222 with tax.
Note that Porter serves Toronto City Centre Airport (YTZ), not Pearson (YYZ). Toronto City Centre Airport is in downtown Toronto.

Alternatively you can always use 9,000 British Airways Avios (transferable from 9,000 AMEX Membership Rewards, 9,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards, or the equivalent of about 7,200 Starpoints) to fly round-trip on American between JFK or LGA and Canadian cities like Toronto or Montreal. You can also use the equivalent of about 6,400 Starpoints when transferred to LAN.

“While on board, passengers enjoy complimentary premium snacks, wine and beer, a spacious cabin environment with leather upholstery, and extra legroom. All Porter passengers have access to a modern, comfortable and stylish lounge at Toronto City Centre Airport, including wireless Internet access, refreshments, and a business centre.”

Daniel Gordon

how can you fly round trip using 7200 starwood points?

Dan

What I mean by “the equivalent of about 7,200 Starpoints” is that when you transfer increments of 20K Starwood points into miles you get a 25% bonus.

So 7,200 x 25% bonus=9,000 BA miles, enough for a round-trip on short-haul AA flights, perfect for Cleveland, Detroit, and many other places as well!

fred

Any fuel charges with starwood? I know avios is 9k points plus $60 or something but from lkwd have shlep to jfk

Dan

@fred:
Starwood points transfer to BA, they have nothing to do with the booking.

There is about $55 of taxes due on all flights from Canada, this is not a fuel surcharge, it’s the same on all airlines.

BA does not charge fuel surcharges within North America. Flying from NYC to CLE has just $5 in tax due for example.

Better To Book With LAN /AA

Dan, it seems to me that it is a better deal to transfer 20K Starwood points into 50K LAN miles as this would give one three return “free” flights between Toronto and NYC (3 x 16K round trip using LAN miles booking on AA = 48K LAN miles + 2000 LAN miles on account). Opposed to using 20K Starwood points into 25K BA miles,as one return trip is 9K BA miles. Therefore in the end with BA miles you have less then three full return trips (ie, 25K divide by 9K 2.7 flights). Or, am I missing something?

Dan

@Better To Book With LAN /AA:
Theoretically you are correct, though there are some intangibles to keep in mind.

-LAN kilometers expire after 36 months unless you fly on LAN. BA miles don’t expire as long as you have activity every 36 months.

-LAN kilometers need to be redeemed over the phone and not all of their reps are competent.
BA miles can be used online.

Talking about New York Toronto: I recently replaced my CIBC Visa (which used to give me Aeroplan points) with a Royal Bank VISA which gives to Avios (one Avio per $ spent).
I got a 50,000. welcome bonus (after spending $ 5,000.).
Also one New York Toronto round trip is 9000 Avios (with some $ 90. in fees) versus 15,000 Aeroplan points (with over $160. in fees).
That’s when you can GET a flight with Aeroplan. They really are very limited in their schedules, and more often than not will charge you 25,000 Aeroplan points (& MORE!).
They used to be the only ones offering you this EWR YYZ trip & got very conceited.

Dan

@yidlmitnfidl:
Not sure how you get $90 is fees.
LGA-YYZ-LGA is 9,000 Avios and $57.70 in mandatory taxes.

@yidlmitnfidl: Do you have a link to that 50,000 offer, all I see is the 15,000?

Fyi, I purchased a September round trip ticket from Newark to Toronto this past Monday (August 6th) on Porter for less than the current 50% off deal. It seems their base price has gone up, so you only get 50% off whatever the base is..

Torontonian

@dan
If your address is a Canadian address the fees for booking with Avios are higher. Thus the $90 fee.
My solution ihas been to change my address to a US address. Then change back for any future transfers .

torontojay

Toronto City Centre Airport has free shuttles to downtown Toronto and the subway. Taxi to downtown from Pearson Airport is about $50 each way, so If your destination is downtown Toronto, you’ll save a lot on ground transportation by flying to Toronto City Centre.

Porter ticket to Toronto City Centre Airport $225 + ground transportation $0 = $225.
LAN or Avios award ticket to Pearson Airport [9000 BA miles or 16000 LAN km] + $55 taxes + $100 round taxi = $155 + [ 9000 BA miles or 16000 LAN km].

can’t seem to figure this out, can someone please tell me how you book newark to toronto for 9000 avios?

daniel

@dan— ive tried to find reward tickets on british airways from nyc to toronto but I get the message that they do not fly there. I have a lot of UR points and want to book some tickets for the holidays. Can you please help with what I am supposed to do?

Dan

@Torontonian:
Why ever have a Canadian address on file?

@torontojay:
You’re making 2 rather large assumption even if downtown Toronto is the destination.

1. That the person won’t be renting a car.
2. That the person has no other ride/shuttle options.

fred

I don’t see any flight this week for this week. Where are these prices

Torontonian

@dan
At times need to transfer points from Canadian cards, (i.e. 1 to 1.5 with RBC points) and need matching address. Otherwise, correct, no need for the Canadian address.
