What does this app offer that Google voice doesn’t?

Dan

@mark:
The current Google Voice app uses minutes for one.
Anyone else want to chime in?

Mike

This app works the same way as OBi100 it logs into your gmail account and allows you to receive and make calls the same way that you can through gmail in a web browser. I use it on an Android phone that has no service plan that I only use with Wifi. As long as you have Wifi it will work just like you had a regular service plan. This should work as a setup to have an American number in Israel or elsewhere overseas.
Just to note this app is not perfect It has the same issues as the OBi100 if your are logged into a computer with gmail it can only ring to one of the active logins, so it is best to create as separate gmail account just for this purpose. I have also had issues with echo’s and answering inbound calls. The app has a lot of settings to play around with and using headphones helps with the echo.

With Groove IP and a 3G/4G/WiFi connection you can make/receive calls to anywhere in the world from anywhere in the world. With one US number that never changes. Very powerful app and a huge money saver.

Mark

@mark: When I came to Israel, and put an Israeli sim card into my galaxy s II, google voice stopped working for calls. I assume this would be true for any international area.You can also use sipdroid for free.

@Dan:

I made phone calls with Google voice when my phone was off. only Wifi was on. Doesn’t that mean that it worked off data?

Awesome app! Thanx Dan!! Its even bluetooth compatible without the need for bluetooth mono!!

Jerry

I just came back last night from Israel. I have GrooveIP on my TMO MyTouch 4g. The product is at best poor. I used an Orange BigTalk sim card and tried to use the app. The voice was poor and many times the person in the States could not make out what I was saying. It may have been my phone or Orange. But, the app over 3g leaves something to be desired. The last time I used the app, I was on the #3 bus in E. Jerusalem at ~2:50pm as they were “calling the faithful.”

I am looking for alternative VoIP apps for Android for my next visit. Any suggestions that you have personally tried???

Jake

Im taking a vacation to europe and israel, wondering if i downloaded this app would i be able to make free calls tousing wifi from those countries

Dan

@Jerry:
Probably had more to do with the slow 3g network than the app.

Yitzi

I never paid for an app before. Do they bill you every month, or just one time?

Dan

@Yitzi:
One time.

this app has worked very well for me in several countries over wi-fi and over the local 3g with a local sim.
of course it will have issues due to the network or the wi-fi but i paid $4.99 for it and would have gladly paid 4 times that.
it has many settings to it although it has worked fine for me out of the box.
the author updates often and listens very well to user feedback, i can’t recommend it enough.

Chaim

1) Please excuse my ignorance; but if I buy this app, does that mean I own it for a year or possibly even longer?
In other words, at what point would I need to renew?
2) Would I automatically get billed when the time runs out or would I be given a choice to renew?
Thanks.

RF

@Chaim: You will be billed when you buy it for the app price. That’s it. You keep it forever and receive all updates for free. Same with all apps unless specifically noted otherwise.
Of course, Google Voice will bill you for calls to outside US/Canada at the int’l rates.

shirley

is there any similar app to this that would help make google voice work on the iphone’s wifi?

Chaim

RF –
Thank you for taking the time to answer.

JR

this App is amazing, I now have GV in Canada!

yankel

Dan: The true enjoyment I get is using the Freedom card to pay parking meters in NYC with the new MUNI meters. 25 cents gets me 10 points no?

Dan

@yankel:
Actually about 12 points! Makes it nearly free!

RF

@shirley: Yes, it’s called Talkatone. I have never used it but from what I understand it’s not as well integrated with iOS as Groove IP is with Android, due to limitations in iOS. It’s free though.
