A friendly warning to everyone – KitchenAid mixers are not what they used to be. I have a 12+ year old 4.5 qt mixer that can handle pretty much anything. We bought a 6 quart Pro-style unit to handle larger batches of challah, etc., and after two units are done. Despite the “Professional” name and a much larger motor, the unit was far less capable. After 10 minutes of kneading even a small batch of dough, the case became too hot to touch – this was never an issue with the old unit. Another issue is that, especially with stiffer doughs like bread, the bowl does not stay snapped into its holder. This requires constant vigilance to make sure that the unit is working properly, since when the bowl snaps up the mixer starts to “walk” across the counter. Also, if you search the Internet, you will learn that KitchenAid has switched to using lower quality part, including plastic motor housings. These will not hold up like your mother’s mixer has.
We’re just glad we didn’t get rid of the older mixer.

My wife uses a “new” professional kitchenaid for challah every week without issues.
YMMV I suppose.

@yossi4k:
Call and ask for an adjustment.
If they say no you can threaten to return and rebuy it and see if that will change their tune…

I agree with Dan – YMMV. MY experience was with 2 versions of a different model, the 6 quart Professional, which also has a different motor.

@aj: I just ordered a minute ago (motzei shabbos) and was able to get it for $211.99. The price they list is $359 but if you click the box on the right side side of the screen where it lists other sellers and prices, it says you can buy new or used. Amazon is one of the sellers selling it used, for $211.99! Go for it!

@Anonymous: sorry, my mistake – I meant to say that Amazon is one of the sellers selling it NEW! So basically, the deal is still going, you just have to know where to find it!
