Amazon will soon launch Prime Wardrobe. It will be free for Amazon Prime members. Currently the program is in private beta testing. You can view how it works in this video.

Most clothes, shoes, and accessories sold by Amazon will be eligible.

You can select 3 or more Prime Wardrobe eligible items and you’ll have 7 days to try them on. You’ll only pay for what you decide to keep.

While some people have been banned from Amazon for excessive returns, presumably Prime Wardrobe orders wouldn’t affect your Amazon standing as that is the intention of the program.

If you keep at least 3 items you’ll also get 10% off those items.

If you keep at least 5 items you’ll get 20% off those items.

The Prime Wardrobe shipping box is resealable and includes a prepaid return label for easy returns. Plus you can schedule a free UPS pickup from your house.

If shopping malls and retail stores weren’t already nervous, they will be now…

This is new to Amazon. But it already exists by several other websites.

Yehuda

So no more 30 day free returns?

John

Not a fan of this, at all.

Dude

Hi Dan. I’m looking into purchasing a canon direct refurb T6. Do you know if AMEX warranty doubling applies to refurb products? What about return protection?
Thanks

Chas

My guess is that this program will fail.
Clothing differs from electronics and books, it more closely resembles perishable food.
Clothing styles change and a hot look is less in demand even 2 weeks later.
Clothing also tends to wilt like food, it does not look great after a few trips back and forth.
To meet demand Amazon will have to stock higher quantities while loads of stuff goes back and forth, with lower sale prices soon after.
The plan is probably to squeeze at both ends; squeeze UPS so they charge small customers more instead and make the suppliers eat the losses.

Jeff bezos is a monopolist and won’t stop going. #invest in amazon

ELY

why is this better then buying clothing on amazon in the past?

Kevin

bestially it’s same idea of “StitchFix” but without the stylist help (so no styling fee) and of course less expensive clothes !

I Love AMAZON !

20 percent off 2 items for what? Tom ford captoe shoes and a Kiton suit ? Or Florsheim and eccos?

AsherO

@Dan:
But will their prices go up to offset the 20% discount when you keep 5 items?

Ten Bucks a Week

I think it will work for them by providing more value. As for me, I am the type of dude who buys 5 of something every few years, so I won’t need them.

jim

I KNOW 10 NEIGHBORS AND ALL DON’T HAVE AMAZON PRIME, WHY? They all got banned, some for too many returns, some for asking and credit credits, etc.

lol

soz

how long will it take the 15 pairs of shoes I order/return to become available at 60%off on 6pm?

James

@John What kind of neighborhood do you live in? I don’t know anyone who has been banned (that I know of… Amazon Prime isn’t something that comes up in conversation)

Whye

@Dude: @Dude: I got return protection on refurb Nikon d3300

Judah

@Dan:

How are returns any easier with this new program?
Currently clothing, shoes and jewelry have 30 day free returns, now it’s shrinking to 7 days.
So basically you gotta try on the clothing immediately and put it back in the box right away or otherwise you bought it.
That doesn’t sound easier to me, though Amazons marketing is obviously working.

The best part is that you don’t have to pay when ordering multiple items and lay out the money until you decide what you want to keep. You pay only after you know you’re keeping the items. I like that!

ben

dan i upgraded my amex to gold to get 100000 hilton points
if i downgrade it back to regular can they take back the points?

Tt

Warbey Parker. All over again. Changing the way we shop. Once you have it in your house. You consider it yours.

Michael

Will Amex return protection allow for returns later than the allotted 7 days?

Leah

Can someone elaborate on how ppl get banned for too many returns? How much is too much…? And do u get a warning? Or do they decide one day your out?

Chaim

This not sustainable!!!
Retailers like TJmaxx and Ross work hands on in trends and styles they work on a 50 – 60% MU on a retail of $16.00 they pay $8.00
Amazon has ship and pack that same item for another $3.00 what is still ok
They will get killed on returns what the cost is $3.00 and more per item to fold and pack back nicely. 8+6=14 were is the profit??

Ross and TJmaxx are not offering much online they have daily great buys in store

They show nice profits and forecasts…

Judah

@Chaim:
It does not cost Amazon $3 per item to ship 3-5 items.
Assuming you order 5 items and keep 2, it might cost Amazon $6 to ship, and another $5 for return shipping and handling. In your example that would leave them with $5 profit on a $32 sale. Which is not bad considering they would’ve gotten nothing if you shopped elsewhere. Now of course if you add in a $75 coat or a pair of $60 shoes this whole equation becomes more and more profitable for Amazon. And that’s exactly their goal by letting you try on things hassle-free, they make you get used to buying everything from them, so when you have your big purchases you will continue purchasing through Amazon.

Sam

@H: @Chaim:

Amazon doesn’t care that much about profit. They are more concerned about dominating a market and driving out competitors.

Once they dominate the market, they can adjust prices for profit. Once a segment is profitable, they can then use those profits to dominate another segment.

They are starting to get some bad press, as long term, this is bad for the economy. they have already killed the entire book publishing industry. It may be a while, but at some point, they are going to be broken up.

Chaim

that is “Assuming you order 5 items and keep 2,”

most consumers try on in store before they buy and leave there what does not look good on them ….size / color/ style etc. etc.
in online apparel there is a huge amount of returns vs. electronics, toys etc. etc.

Shipping and return we will never know the real cost , but based that Wal mart is now trying new shipping method with employee on the way home to deliver it seems the cost is more then we all thought… UPS is now adding $1.00 for the next holiday season.

Beside that the low cost of shipping is when they put one item in a carton , once they need to combine there is Labor involved what seems you don’t add.

Restocking fee in clothing is 3 X as much , if it not restock correct need to be folded and put away they will not be able to sell it will have a %75 chance of return , plus they will get back %50 damage what was worn. People trying on in there house leave it laying around don’t care if it gets dirty and so on…

as you read in depth were Amazon makes there profit is when other people sell FBA, it will not be different here just worse a jacket after season is like left overs food after Passover. For FBA they charge the seller all warehouse cost ,

Bottom line you could say they add more money for profit on Apparel what is all cost in Apparel sourcing and so on….. if so much money in this we should of seen so much more success in the last few years in Apparel on line

S

Dan – I was thinking the same thing as @Judah. Now instead of having a month to return, you have a week. Yes, there is some advantages, but that is a huge disadvantage.

Dave

@jim: Let me guess. You live in Lakewood

Ash

i think there is a perception that Amazon has the lowest prices on almost any item, whether clothes, electronics, etc. i have found that on certain items, Amazon is overpriced – by a wide margin. 2 recent examples. a 1,200 Amp Car battery Jump Starter was advertised on Lowe’s for $99 and was selling on Amazon for $114. I bought a Tommy Hilfiger belt on Amazon for $25. Century 21 department stores have Tommy Hilfiger belts for $14.99.

Bottom line is, you should do some searching to compare prices at different sites, before making a purchase on Amazon. you may be surprised at the prices you find at Amazon’s competition.
