Google’s Project Fi is pretty awesome.

Google gives a free SIM card and charges $20/month for unlimited calling and texting. Data is $10/GB and is pro-rated based on exactly the number of MB used, so if you use 100MB you’ll be charged $1.

It uses Sprint and T-Mobile towers for service. Compatible phones include the Pixel, Nexus 5X, Nexus 6, and Nexus 6P. If you activate service on one of those phones you may be able to use the SIM card on other phones.

I’m a data hog and am on a grandfathered Verizon unlimited data business plan, so I don’t use Project Fi domestically. But I do use Project Fi when I travel abroad and it’s great. 4G LTE data is charged at the same rate, no matter where you are in the world. International phone calls are 20 cents/minute if you dial over a cell network, but you can dial over the data network via Google Hangouts for free.

You can use your Project Fi phone as a hotspot and you can even get a free data only SIM for other devices to use at the same low rate per GB anywhere in the world.

If you activate Project Fi you will lose your Google Voice number. I have Project Fi on a dedicated Google account so that it didn’t take away by Google Voice account.

I keep my Project Fi plan paused when I’m home so that it costs me nothing. You can unpause it at will and just pay for the pro-rated time that it’s active. If you activate it for an hour you would pay $20/30/24=About 2.7 cents per hour.

Currently Google is offering a $10 Google Play credit for Project Fi users. I unpaused my service for a minute to take advantage of the promotion.
Just sign in, click on “Explore,” and click on the tree. You’ll get a $10 code for Google Play. I was able to copy the code and apply it on my primary Google account. The code must be added to a Google account by 1/31/17 and used by 12/31/17.

What is Google play credit good for, if I don’t buy apps?

I agree – Project Fi is awesome. I also use Project Fi for international travel – very simple/straightforward to use on my Nexus 5x phone. I have Verizon (with grandfathered unlimited data, but now paying the higher monthly fee for it after the change last year) that I have for domestic use.

Go fi!

I got the credit. Any recommendation on ways to maximize the value? What’s a Google Play credit best for?
I also noticed a 75% off movie promo in my account; though not sure if that was bc of my Fi account or if it was targeted.

I’m thinking of getting the discounted Nexus5 and then selling it. Is that a good idea?

Google told me last year when I asked them about pausing service that I could only do it for up to 3 months per time and only 2 times per year.
