Getting To Israel Using Starwood Starpoints, 2017 Edition

Wednesday, March 22nd, 2017

American Express is a DansDeals.com advertiser.

-The Starwood Consumer AMEX and the Starwood Business AMEX currently have limited time offers to earn 35,000 signup points each with no fee for the first year. You can also use your Starpoints to stay free at the the highly rated Sheraton Tel Aviv and later this year at the W Tel Aviv – Jaffa which is scheduled to open on October 1st. With a Starwood business card you’ll even get free lounge access and meals at the Sheraton Tel Aviv!

Related post: The Ultimate Israel Mileage Award Chart (2015)

The Starwood card is an excellent card for general spending. You can use just a couple thousand points for free hotel nights or transfer points into the mileage programs of 36 different airlines with a 25% transfer bonus. If you are transferring points you may also want to consider Starwood’s Nights & Flights option where you can save 8,000 points on a mileage transfer plus a 5 night stay in a category 3 or 4 hotel.

To make a mileage transfer just login to your Starwood account at SPG.com. If you have never made an account at SPG.com you may need to set one up. Locate your SPG number on the Starwood AMEX statement where it lists how many points you earned in the past month and for the year. Then you can setup an SPG.com account. Click here to transfer Starpoints into airline miles. Note that transfers can take a few days to complete.

A new feature that is awesome but makes the options are lot more complicated is the ability to transfer Starpoints into Marriott points at a 1:3 ratio.

Marriott has their own airline transfer option and an excellent miles+nights redemption option.

You can read more about the 5 ways of transferring Starpoints into airline miles here.

-With 90K Starpoints you can get 270K Marriott points.

-With 270K Marriott points you can get 7 nights in a Marriott category 1-5 hotel plus 132K United miles! Or you can get 7 nights plus 120K miles with Air Canada, Alaska, American, British Airways, or Delta.

That’s a better deal than transferring 100K Starpoints into 125K airline miles. However for the purpose of this post I’ll ignore the Marriott transfer options as they only work in specific transfer amounts and it will make this post even more complicated. However, I have added United as an option below using via Marriott as Starpoints don’t transfer at a 20K:25K ratio with United, but the transfer ratio to United is worthwhile via Marriott at 18,667 Starpoints to 25,000 United miles. You can do far better than that with a miles+nights redemption and you should read this post to learn more.

The rates in this post are for flights from NYC to Tel Aviv unless otherwise noted.

You do need to pick up the first leg of the journey in Toronto, though you can end your trip in Chicago, Newark, San Francisco, or Washington DC as your bags must be picked up there and rechecked to your final destination.

-The San Francisco flights are still operated by the Queen of the Skies in case you want to fly in the upper deck before it goes away:

-If you fly via Chicago you’ll be able to access the new Polaris lounge, which is probably the nicest lounge you’ll find in the US.

-United doesn’t have Polaris seats installed on these routes, but you will get the new Saks’ Polaris bedding and Pajamas on these flights.

-If you credit a Toronto-Shanghai flight via San Francisco to Air Canada Aeroplan you’ll earn 25,230 miles thanks to 150% earnings for this United P class fare. If you credit to United you would earn 8,140 miles.

These fares are not on sale with miles, but you can pay for the ticket with “hybrid points” if you have AMEX or Chase points and a Business Platinum or Sapphire Reserve card.

New Zealand is still on my bucket list, but back in 2010 Mimi and I flew around the world on AA’s defunct round-the-world award and for Australia we stopped off in Melbourne, Sydney, Tasmania, and the Whitsunday Islands. Truly an awesome country!

-3-5 days in Sydney would give you enough time to experience the phenomenal Park Hyatt, climb the Harbour bridge, check out the Opera House, pet some Koalas and Kangaroos, and have a day in the Blue Mountains.

-4-6 days in Melbourne would allow for a road trip of the sublime Great Ocean Road and the breathtaking Grampians before going to to Malborune for Shabbos at the excellent Park Hyatt which is around the corner from a great Chabad House. A flight from Sydney to Melbourne is 4.5K BA Avios with no fuel surcharges.

-2-4 days in Hamilton Island or Cairns would give you time to snorkel or dive the Great Barrier Reef. If you’re based in Hamilton Island you’ll also be able to checked out famous Whitehaven Beach and the Whitsunday Islands. A flight from Sydney to Hamilton Island is 7.5K BA Avios with no fuel surcharges. Sydney to Cairns is 10K Avios.

-We spent 4 nights covering the entire beautiful island of Tasmania without realizing just how much driving that would entail. Doing over a week would have been ideal.  A flight from Sydney to Hobart is 4.5K BA Avios with no fuel surcharges.

-We didn’t make it to more remote places like Uluru, Kangaroo Island, Perth, or the Australian Outback, but perhaps on a future trip?

Then again 10K BA Avios can also get you from Sydney to New Zealand. That’s been on my bucket list for a very long time…

Starting May 5th There’s One United Flight From Newark To Tel Aviv You’ll Want To Avoid In Coach And Another You’ll Want To Avoid In Business

Saturday, February 25th, 2017

Effective May 5th United will start flying their new Boeing 777-300ER (77W) aircraft between Newark and Tel Aviv.

The 77W will be operated by subsidiary United crew members on the late night flight 90 from from Newark to Tel Aviv and the late night flight 91 from Tel Aviv to Newark.

United will continue to operate their pre-merger Continental 777-200 (772) aircraft with subsidiary Continental crew members for the afternoon flight 84 from Newark to Tel Aviv and the afternoon flight 85 from Tel Aviv to Newark.

The 77W offers United’s new Polaris business class with a 1-2-1 seating configuration that allows direct aisle access for all business class seats. It’s a big improvement over the 772 which has a 2-2-2 configuration that requires jumping over your seatmate or being jumped over by your seatmate if you select the window side seats.

The configuration is denser than business class on most airlines with a 1-2-1 business class, but reports are mostly quite positive so far and the middle seats in every other row offer a good option for couples traveling together. Plus with a whopping 60 business class seats, upgrades may be slightly easier than on other airlines with fewer seats:

ua

The good news ends in business class though. United has decided to cram 10 seats across throughout the 102 Economy Plus and 204 Economy Minus seats. By all accounts, it will be a tight squeeze for larger people in coach with seat width dropping from about 18 inches to just 17 inches.

ua1

The old pre-merger Continental 772 aircraft will eventually be converted to have Polaris business class 1-2-1 seating, but for now is 2-2-2. It will also eventually be converted to have 3-4-3 seating in coach, but for now it still has 3-3-3 seating.

Bottom line: Starting from May 5th for the near future, United flight 84/85 will offer a better experience for coach passengers and United flight 90/91 will offer a better experience for business class passengers.

It’s worth noting that both flights already have the new Polaris branded bedding and pillows. Mattress pads and gel cooled pillows are even available upon request. However neither Newark-Tel Aviv flight will offer Pajamas in business class, though United’s Dreamliner operated nonstop flight from San Francisco to Tel Aviv is long enough to qualify for business class Pajamas, which are given out upon request.

LOT Polish Adds 2nd Daily Warsaw-Tel Aviv Flight, Facilitating Excellent Connections From The US

Friday, February 24th, 2017

LOT Polish has responded to RyanAir’s plethora of new service between Poland and Israel with new service from Lublin, Gdańsk, Poznań, and Wrocław to Tel Aviv. More intriguing is that they’re increasing their Warsaw to Tel Aviv service from 7 weekly flights to 13 weekly flights.

LOT Polish often has great economy and business class sales from the US to Tel Aviv, but their connection times are awful. I’ve skipped posting some of their deals to Tel Aviv because of them.

For example a flight from JFK to Tel Aviv on 5/14 requires a 10.5 hour connection in Warsaw. A return flight from Tel Aviv to JFK on 5/23 requires a 9 hour connection in Warsaw.

Chicago to Tel Aviv on 5/14 requires a 9.5 hour connection in Warsaw. A return flight from Tel Aviv to Chicago on 5/23 requires a 9 hour connection in Warsaw.

Starting in mid-June the additional Warsaw-Tel Aviv flights will make connections far more palatable.

For example a flight on 6/18 from JFK to Tel Aviv only requires a 3 hour connection in Warsaw. A return flight from Tel Aviv to JFK on 6/28 requires a 1.5 hour connection in Warsaw.

A flight on 6/18 from Chicago to Tel Aviv only requires a 2 hour connection in Warsaw. A return flight from Tel Aviv to Chicago on 6/28 requires a 1 hour connection in Warsaw.

LOT Polish is also launching Newark and Los Angeles service to Warsaw this year and the new flights will enable great connections from there as well.

LOT flies the Dreamliner from the US to Warsaw with lie-flat seating in business, but Warsaw to Tel Aviv is served by a 737 with European style business class. It will be operated by 737-800s which are being added to LOT’s fleet this year as opposed to the current 737-400s operating the route.

LOT is a Star Alliance member, so you can use miles from airlines like United for award flights as well:

Singapore: Fly In Business Class From The US To Europe Or Asia For $1,996 (Or 99.8K Hybrid Points) Round-Trip!

Monday, February 20th, 2017

American Express is a DansDeals.com advertiser.
-Earn 5 points per dollar on the AMEX Platinum Card or 3 points per dollar on airfare with the AMEX Premier Rewards Gold Card or the AMEX Business Gold Rewards Card.

Bookable on Priceline. Tickets purchased from Priceline today are refundable until 11:29pm EST tomorrow. Please see this post for directions on how to cancel these tickets.

-Limited seats are available on each date.

-Always search for 1 seat and then work your way up to the number of seats you need in order to book as many seats on sale as you can.

-The maximum stay in 30 days.

-This is a great business class sale from Singapore Airlines. My most enjoyable business class was on the 19 hour extravaganza nonstop from Newark to Singapore. Singapore’s flight attendants are by far the best in the business and the business class seat was massive and comfy:

JFK-FRA is operated by an A380, the LAX flights are operated by a 777-300ER (77W), and the Houston flight is operated by an A350. All of those have lie-flat seats and direct aisle access from all business class seats.

-You can credit this Singapore D class fare to any Star Alliance and some partner carriers. For example if you fly from LAX-Seoul you can credit the flight to:
-Ethiopian/SAS (200%): 23,976 miles
-Lufthansa/Turkish (150%): 17,982 miles
-Aegean/Air Canada/ANA/Avianca/Singapore (125%): 14,985 miles
-JetBlue/United (100%): 11,988 miles
-Virgin America (50%): 5,994 miles (transferable to 7,793 Alaska miles)

HURRY! Excellent Coach And Business Award Availability On Air Canada’s New Montreal-Tel Aviv Route!

Thursday, February 16th, 2017

Related: 55K Miles For Signing Up For A United Explorer Card; On Expanded Awards, Excursionist Perks, And Why The United Card Is My Favorite Airline Mileage Card

Award tickets to Israel are notoriously hard to find. “Hybrid points” are often the best bet for Israel.

But Air Canada has just loaded their new Montreal to Tel Aviv route. Award availability from Montreal to Tel Aviv is incredible. The return from Tel Aviv to Montreal is not as good, but is very decent for direct flights between North America and Israel.

Business class on the A330 is a 1-1-1 configuration with direct aisle access for all seats.

Coach has a 2-4-2 configuration.

Flights from Montreal to Tel Aviv operate on Sundays and Thursdays and flights from Tel Aviv to Montreal operate on Mondays and Fridays from June 22nd until October 16th.

The Montreal-Tel Aviv flight departs at 6:35pm and arrives 12:15pm the next day. The Tel Aviv-Montreal flight departs at 1:55pm and arrives 6:20pm the same day.

Orthodox Jews will want to be sure to check Shabbos times before booking the Thursday/Friday flights.

The following dates have at least 8 saver award seats in both coach and business class from Montreal to Tel Aviv:
June 22, 25, 29
July 2, 6, 9, 13, 16, 20, 27, 30
August 3, 6, 10, 13, 17, 20, 27, 31
September 7, 14, 17, 21, 28
October 1, 5, 12, 15
Other Sundays and Thursdays do have saver coach award seats from Montreal to Tel Aviv and 8/24 has 2 saver business seats.

The following dates have at least 8 saver award seats in both coach and business class from Tel Aviv to Montreal:
June 23
July 7, 14, 21, 28
August 4, 11, 18, 21
September 11
October 16
Other Mondays and Fridays do have saver coach award seats from Montreal to Tel Aviv.

These dates will sell out quickly, please post a comment if a date is no longer available.

For example there is award space to fly your whole family from NYC to Tel Aviv for Sukkos in business class. With United miles it would cost 85K miles in coach or 160K miles in business class, round trip per person:

-You can transfer miles from Chase Ultimate Rewards to United (1:1 ratio) instantly. Awards can be cancelled for free within 24 hours. United never collectes fuel surcharges. After 24 hours non-elites will pay $75 to cancel awards more than 60 before a flight or $125 within 60 days of a flight. Awards can be booked online.

-Air Canada charges 80K in coach or 165K in business class round-trip and they’ll also tack on some $750 in taxes and fuel surcharges for Air Canada flights. Points transfer instantly (1:1 ratio) from AMEX. Transfers from Starwood (20K:25K ratio) can take 2-10 days. Awards can be booked online.

Singapore charges 75K in coach or 115K in business class round-trip. But they’ll tack on $735 in taxes and fuel surcharges for Air Canada awards. You can transfer points from AMEX, Chase, or Citi at a 1:1 ratio, but it will take a day or 2 for points to show up. Transfers from Starwood (20K:25K ratio) can take 2-10 days. You can call Singapore to book at 1-312-843-5333.

-ANA charges just 65K miles in coach or 104K miles in business class round-trip. Best of all they don’t charge fuel surcharges for Air Canada flights, taxes will be $66 from Montreal, or less from the USA. Unfortunately it can take 1-3 days to transfer points from AMEX to ANA (1:1 ratio) and transfers from Starwood to ANA (20K:25K ratio) can take 2-10 days. Awards can be booked online, though flights with connections may need to be booked over the phone.

-Aegean charges a mere 60K miles in coach or 90K miles in business class round-trip and you’ll need even fewer Starpoints than that thanks to the Starwood 20K:25K transfer ratio. Factoring in a 25% discount that’s effectively 48K Starpoints in coach or 72K Starpoints in business class round-trip. They also don’t charge fuel surcharges for Air Canada flights, taxes will be $88 from Montreal, or less from the USA. Transfers from Starwood can take 2-10 days. You can call Aegean to book at +30-21-0626-1000.

Get 20K-25K AMEX Points For Spending $1,000 On Air France With AMEX Offers

Monday, February 13th, 2017

American Express is a DansDeals.com advertiser.

All of my AMEX cards that earn Membership Rewards points are targeted for an excellent offer: 20K bonus points for spending $1,000 on Air France on their US site by 4/14/17.

af

You are allowed to make multiple purchases to reach $1,000.

If you have multiple targeted primary and secondary cards and have more than $2,000 to spend with Air France you should split up the itineraries to earn more bonus points. In other words if you have 6 $500 tickets to buy and you have 3 targeted cards then you can make 3 reservations of $1,000 each on each card to earn 60K bonus points from this offer.

With a $1,000 purchase you can earn up to 25K AMEX points depending on which AMEX card you use. For example a Premier Rewards Gold Card would earn 23K points (3K base points+20K bonus) and a Platinum Card would earn 25K points (5K base points+20K bonus). That’s on top of Flying Blue miles that you’ll earn for the flight.

If you have a Business Platinum Card you’ll be able to use 25K points for at least $500 of paid airfare in the future!

You can use this link to access the old AMEX Offers interface, which many people find easier to save multiple offers with the multi-tab method.

To see if you have this offer in your account just login to your AMEX account, click on any of your cards to go the activity page, click on “AMEX Offers For You,” and save the offer to your account.

If you also have multiple cards with the offer don’t rush to save the offer to your account!  Open up the Offers page for each card in a separate tab in the same browser.  Then go between the tabs to save the offer to each of your targeted cards.  Otherwise once you save the offer to one card it disappears from your other cards.

Always check all primary and secondary card offers, as secondary cards will often have offers that the primary card does not. You can add secondary cards in your own name to your primary login or you can create a new login for other secondary cards.

Note that you only have to worry about an offer disappearing from other cards when they are registered to the same account. Saving an offer won’t affect cards that have their own login.

If you mess up and don’t save the offer to a card you can always remove a card from one login and make a dedicated login for it to register it. Alternatively you can remove the card that has an offer saved to it and the offer will reappear for the rest of the cards registered to that account. Once you properly save the offer to all cards on that account you can re-register the deleted card back to the same account.

Targeted cards for this offer include:

Air Canada Responds To Air Transat With More Nonstop Service From Montreal-Tel Aviv!

Monday, February 13th, 2017

Montreal based Air Transat started selling twice weekly nonstop service from Montreal to Tel Aviv earlier this year. It will fly an A330 from Montreal to Tel Aviv on Sundays and Wednesdays from June 18th until October 29th and from Tel Aviv to Montreal on Mondays and Thursdays from June 19th until October 30th.

Today Air Canada has announced that they too will fly an A330 nonstop from Montreal to Tel Aviv on Sundays and Thursdays and from Tel Aviv to Montreal on Mondays and Fridays from June 22nd until October 16th.

Tickets will go on sale this Wednesday.

The Montreal-Tel Aviv flight departs at 6:35pm and arrives 12:15pm the next day. The Tel Aviv-Montreal flight departs at 1:55pm and arrives 6:20pm the same day.

That’s great news for Canadians and Star Alliance fans. It’s just unfortunate that they chose to operate one of the 2 weekly frequencies on Thursday/Friday, which are not very useful for Orthodox Jews. The Thursday outbound flight allows arrivals into Tel Aviv with enough time for Shabbos, but many people would prefer a larger margin for error in case of delays. The Friday return flight arrives too close to Shabbos in Montreal.

Hopefully we’ll see some nice price wars between Air Canada and Air Transat.

Air Canada also announced that their 787 operated Toronto-Tel Aviv route will move to year-round daily service starting this summer.

For those keeping score at home that means that flights between North America and Tel Aviv in the summer/fall of 2017 should look like:
Boston: 3 weekly flights on El Al.
JFK: 7 weekly flights on Delta, 16 weekly flights on El Al.
Los Angeles: 5 weekly flights on El Al.
Miami: Unknown number (Likely between 3-6) of weekly flights on El Al starting Q3.
Montreal: 2 weekly flights on Air Canada, 2 weekly flights on Air Transat.
Newark: 14 weekly flights on United, 6 weekly flights on El Al.
San Francisco: 7 weekly flights on United.
Toronto: 7 weekly flights on Air Canada, 5 weekly flights on El Al.

Memo to El Al or United: We’re all waiting for you to announced Chicago-Tel Aviv service already…

Great Ocean Road, outside Melbourne:

Back in 2010 Mimi and I flew around the world on AA’s defunct round-the-world award and for Australia we stopped off in Melbourne, Sydney, Tasmania, and the Whitsunday Islands.

These fares are not on sale with miles, but you can pay for the ticket with “hybrid points” if you have AMEX or Chase points and a Business Platinum or Sapphire Reserve card.

Using AMEX points:

JetBlue Honoring (Most) Free Vacation Reservations; A History Of Past Free Vacation Glitches

Wednesday, January 18th, 2017

On Sunday I covered a JetBlue vacations deal that offered $150 off domestic vacation packages and $250 off international vacation packages with no minimum purchase requirement. I also wrote about how to use it for free airfare, hotels, and car rentals even if you only needed one of those.

Before I made those posts I booked a dummy booking to confirm that it would give a confirmation number with a $0 purchase. I called back to cancel that booking as I had no intention of using it and the rep confirmed that ticketed vacations for adults would be honored. However vacations booked for those under 18 have been cancelled.

Some DD readers have already flown and stayed in hotels for free with the deal!

4 hours after I posted the deal JetBlue added a $2,000 or $2,500 minimum purchase to the deal’s terms.

JetBlue has to be commended for honoring their glitches though. In December a glitch lowered the price of transcontinental flights to $64 and their website remained jammed for a day. They even honored the fare for people who called about not being able to access their website.

In June they announced a promotion targeting Virgin America flyers due to JetBlue losing the bid to buy them out to Alaska. They had intended to target people that had Virgin America miles but forgot to exclude people transferring in points from SPG with a 25% bonus. In the end, Alaska Airlines even bumped up the Virgin America points by another 30% and JetBlue decided to honor the promotion despite high-level talks about whether to try to bail. We flew to Boston and got over 300,000 points for our mileage run.

But this was far from the first vacation package glitch:

-In 2006 I posted a deal for a flight+hotel package to Hawaii for $87 thanks to a $400 off Northwest Airlines vacation package that didn’t set a minimum purchase. I was in a Smicha program then in LA and went with my chavrusa to Oahu for Purim. In 48 hours we brought a suitcase of food for the local shluchim, bought Hawaiian print Kipot, paid our respects at Pearl Harbor, climbed Diamond Head, hiked to Manoa Falls, snorkeled in Hanauma Bay, and drove around the island.

I fell in love with the state and have been back 6 times since, including a month-long honeymoon spanning 4 islands.

-In March 2010 Expedia offered $400 off vacations packages to the Bahamas, resulting in hundreds of DansDeals readers getting free airfare+hotels there.

-On a Saturday in November 2010 Expedia once again offered $300 off vacation packages to Las Vegas and other cities. A friend had asked me if we wanted to shoot some pool that night. I’m not much of a pool guy, but agreed when Mimi said she was in. When I logged onto my laptop after Shabbos, I saw the deal on DDF and got involved with posting it and writing about its potential.

In the meantime, I told Mimi that the Expedia deal would keep me busy all night. At that time there were only 1,100 @DansDeals followers on Twitter and the deal lasted until 3:40AM the next day.

Eventually, Mimi told me what was really going on that night, there were dozens of people waiting for a surprise birthday party for me. Oops. That wouldn’t be the only birthday party I nearly missed due to a glitch, United’s 4 Mile Island glitch happened just before Rafi’s 1st birthday party.

Meanwhile, once at the party everyone wanted to book all-expense paid vacations to Las Vegas. Just about everyone in attendance wound up booking Vegas vacations with free airfare, Bellagio stays, airport limo transfers, Cirque du Soleil tickets, etc. Due to issues with our room the Bellagio even wound up buying us kosher steak and lamb chops for dinner.

While watching the Pats-Texans game this past Saturday night with a group of friends we got into a discussion of the free Vegas vacation deal and when something like that would return. Less than 24 hours later JetBlue delivered!

Hong Kong is a fascinating East meets West city and is home to several great kosher restaurants and shuls. Mul Hayam restaurant, located next to the Kehilat Zion shul in the Kowloon section of Hong Kong, is excellent. The JCC located on Hong Kong Island has very good dairy and meat restaurants as well as an awesome Sunday night all you can eat buffet, just don’t forget to bring your passport to get in! Chabad of Lantau also offers meals with delivery options.

We spent a Shabbos with Chabad of Hong Kong Island where the food was excellent and the atmosphere is awesome. People have rave reviews about Shabbos at Chabad and Kehilat Zion in Kowloon as well.

After Shabbos we moved the W in Kowloon, which is one of my favorite SPG hotels in the world. We got an amazing upgrade and there’s a very cool rooftop infinity pool and hot tub. Plus the bellhop picked up our bags from our room and checked them straight home to Cleveland without us ever having to touch them thanks to the airport express station located in the W’s basement.

There are lots of other great hotels where you can spend your points at as well.

Most hotels even give you a free cell phone to use while in Hong Kong.

Americans do not need a visa to travel to Hong Kong or to take the ferry from Hong Kong to nearby Macau.

These fares are not on sale with miles, but you can pay for the ticket with “hybrid points” if you have AMEX or Chase points and a Business Platinum or Sapphire Reserve card.

Using AMEX points:

If you have The Enhanced Business Platinum® Card from American Express OPEN you can get a 50% rebate on the airline of your choice in coach and on all airlines in business/first class

The 50% rebate will go back into your account the day after redeeming points.

A $505.26 flight will be 50,526 points and you would get a 50% rebate making the effective cost just 25,263 points, a value of 2 cents per point:
